Surgeries – Vascular
When procedures are performed where blood supply to the brain or spinal cord is jeopardized, IONM may be necessary.
Indications:
During aortic aneurysm resection, IONM is used to predict spinal cord ischemia when major arterial feeders are temporarily occluded. IONM is particularly useful during carotid endarterectomies where it aids in the decision on whether or not to shunt around the surgical site. It may also help predict distal embolic events and hypoperfusion. It has also been advocated to use IONM during cardiac bypass procedures to help prevent hypoperfusion injuries to the brain.
Modalities used:
SSEP, EEG, and TcMEP
