EEG- Electroencephalography
EEG monitoring is the process of amplifying, recording and analyzing the electrical activity of the brain. Electrical signals are generated in the brain by excitatory and inhibitory post synaptic potentials. EEG studies are used for intraoperative monitoring during treatment of arteriovenous malformations, intracranial aneurysms, and most commonly carotid endarterectomies. EEGs are also used for surgeries involving epileptic patients to aid in the localization of a focus and for gauging anesthetic and hypothermic/hypotensive effects.
